Average Household Size Across the U.S.

MONDAY, NOV 23, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic is becoming especially hard on places with small households, according to a Social Explorer analysis. Half of the 20 U.S. counties with the smallest average household size are in places where the virus is running rampant, including Jones County, S.D.; Iron County, Wis. And Nelson County, N.D. All three counties have average household sizes of fewer than two people, and all have infection rates higher than 5 percent of the population.

Small households, however, don’t necessarily translate into higher COVID infection rates. Kalawao County, a spit of land on Moloka’i that has the nation’s fewest residents and smallest average household size, remains the only one of 3,143 U.S. counties that hasn’t reported a case of coronavirus. Use Social Explorer’s award-winning mapping tools to see your county’s average household size.
