For those who have used the ACS Summary File in previous years, the files for the 1-year estimates are similar to prior publications, with the following exceptions:
- The "merge_5_6" File Renamed to "Sequence Number and Table Number Lookup"
The merge_5_6 file for the 2009 ACS 1-year Summary File links the tables to the sequence files. For the 2010 ACS 1-year Summary File, it was renamed the "Sequence Number and Table Number Lookup" file, a name that more accurately describes the purpose and contents of this file. The name is already being used for the 2007-2009 ACS 3-year Summary File and 2005-2009 ACS 5-year Summary File. The file is in Microsoft Excel format (.xls), text format (.txt), and SAS database format (.sas7bdat) at
www2.census.gov/acs2010_1yr/summaryfile/.
Note that the sequence numbers for the Summary File are not consistent across years or data releases. For example, the sequence numbers for the 2010 ACS 1-year Summary File are different than the 2009 ACS 1-year Summary File, as well as the 2008-2010 ACS 3-year Summary File and the 2006-2010 ACS 5-year Summary File.
- Geography Files Now Offered in Comma Delimited Format
The geography files are now offered in two formats: position based and comma delimited. In previous years, the geography files were only offered in position based format.
- SummaryFileXLS.zip Renamed to SummaryFileTemplates.zip
SummaryFileXLS.zip contains templates (or column headers) for each of the sequence files. For the 2010 ACS 1-year Summary File, it was renamed to "SummaryFileTemplates.zip" to more accurately describe the contents of this file. This name is also being used for the 2008-2010 ACS 3-year Summary File and 2006-2010 ACS 5-year Summary File. In addition, we added a template for the geography file. SummaryFileTemplates.zip is located at
http://www2.census.gov/acs2010_1yr/summaryfile/UserTools/
- Missing Value Has Been Changed From Dot to Empty Cell
The 2009 ACS Summary Files used a dot "." to indicate that an estimate was unavailable due to coefficient of variation (CV) filtering or Disclosure Review Board (DRB) restrictions. For the 2010 ACS Summary Files, the dot is being replaced by an empty cell. For more information, visit Appendix C.3.
- Instructions Added on How to Join the Summary File to TIGER/Line Shapefiles
The Summary File Technical Documentation now includes instructions on how to join the ACSSF to TIGER/Line Shapefiles. For more information, visit Chapter 2.6.
- Folders Have Been Renamed
The names of the folders on the website that hold the zipped files have been modified to better describe their contents. These have been renamed in an effort to deter novice users from inadvertently downloading the entire contents of the Summary File.
