Change in Housing Units Over the Last Decade

WEDNESDAY, OCT 27, 2021

The affordable housing crisis in a sentence? Almost half of all U.S. counties lost housing units over the decade, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2020 Census data. Among the nation’s 3,143 counties, the number of housing units fell in 1,593 U.S. counties between 2010 and 2020.

Seven of the 10 counties with the largest numerical losses were in the nation’s Rust Belt, with Wayne County, Mich., losing 31,483 housing units. It was followed by Genesee County, Mich. (9,093 housing units lost) and Cuyahoga County, Ohio (5,938). The pain extended into rural America, where the counties with the greatest percentage decreases included Edwards County, Texas (-40 percent), Esmeralda County, Nev. (-36.8 percent), and Real County, Texas (-36.3 percent). Use Social Explorer’s customizable mapping and report tools to view changes in the housing market in your county over the last decade.
