How Has Working From Home Changed in the Last Decade?

MONDAY, MAR 28, 2022

The percentage of Americans working from home has almost doubled over the last decade, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released Census data. Barely 1 in 25 U.S. workers were based out of their home, according to the 2006-10 American Community Survey. Figures released last week from the 2016-20 American Community Survey show 1 in 14 Americans were working from their home as the global COVID-19 pandemic began to take hold.

Almost 18 percent of the 8,500 workers in Vineyard Haven, Mass., worked from home during the 2016-20 period, according to the Census Bureau. It was trailed by Faribault, Minn. (16.6 percent); Truckee, Calif. (16.2 percent); Boulder, Colo. (16.1 percent); and Clearlake, Calif. (14.9 percent).

Use Social Explorer’s cutting-edge reporting and mapping tools to examine the most recent work-from-home trends in your metropolitan area.
