Median Household Income Across the U.S., 2021

MONDAY, OCT 31, 2022

The nation’s most well-to-do households have moved. The nation’s capital, which was the metropolitan statistical area with the greatest median household income a decade ago, has been eclipsed by tech-heavy metros, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2021 American Community Survey data. San Jose was No. 1 by far, with a median household income of $139,892; San Francisco was a distant second at $116,005, with Heber, Utah, coming in third at $115,188.

The only capital area metros to make the top 10 in 2021 were the Washington, D.C., metro ($110,355), and California, Md. ($108,307). They were followed by Seattle ($101,721); Bridgeport, Conn. ($100,810), and Boston ($100,750). The only two metros with median household incomes less than $100,00 but that still cracked the top 10 were Napa, Calif. ($97,213), and Oxnard, Calif. ($96,454).
