WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022
Even while median household incomes for Black Americans increased by only 4.3 percent over the last decade, the typical Black household in 15 U.S. counties registered triple-digit income gains, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2016-20 American Community Survey data. The typical Black household in Hickman County, Tenn., reported $61,813 in income – a 301 percent increase from 2010 and far more than the national median for Black households of $43,674, but still less than the national median of $64,994.
Other large gainers included Wilbarger County, Texas (+285.8 percent to $58,019), and Orleans County, N.Y. (+273.4 percent to $65,179). Among counties where Black households made up more than 5 percent of the population, Loudoun County, Va., was the wealthiest, with a median income of $126,502 for Black households, a 20.4 percent increase from 2010. It was trailed by Stafford County, Va. ($118,821, +14.2 percent), and Nassau County, N.Y. ($105,331, +13.3 percent).
