Rate of Infection Across the United States

TUESDAY, APR 21, 2020

When it comes to testing for coronavirus, not all state responses are created equal. Harvard researchers suggest the U.S. will need to test 152 people for every 100,000 residents before it's safe to allow more mingling. So far, only one state — Rhode Island — has accomplished even half that rate over the last six weeks, with 78 tests per 100,000 people. New York, which has been hit hardest by the virus, has a current rate of 75 per 100,000 people, the second-best in the nation. At the other end of the scale, Kansas is testing only 14 of every 100,000 people; Texas and Virginia are tied for second-worst, with 15 tests per 100,000 residents.
