Where are the Shortest Work Commutes in the United States?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of workers out of the office and into the kitchen, living room, or bedroom corner, only about 2.8 percent, or 4 million Americans could boast of a commute of five minutes or less, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2016-20 American Community Survey data. Among counties with more than 100,000 workers, Richland County, S.C., led the field for brief commutes with 8.1 percent of workers needing five minutes or less to get to work.Richland was followed by Norfolk City, Va. (6.3 percent); Cumberland County, N.C. (5.5 percent); and San Luis Obispo and Tulare counties in California (4.2 percent). It probably comes as no surprise to residents where the smallest percentage took less than five minutes to clock into work: Queens County, N.Y. (0.7 percent), Arlington County, Va. (0.9 percent); and Miami-Dade County, Fla.
